Bullfrog was picked up as a stray on the southside and taken in by a humane organization that tried their best to find him a home. He had been there a while (eight months) and so they reached out to us, thinking that a change in scenery may do him some good.
In the time that he has been with us we discovered that his teeth were a mess (he had to have 8 of them pulled). He has a degenerative condition in his neck. He does not like having his neck touched. Bullfrog does well in playgroup with the other dogs and is excellent about letting us know when he is in the mood for human company - or he if would rather just hang out on his bed.
If you are looking for a hiking buddy, snuggle bug, or a dog that you can wrestle with - that is not Bullfrog. If you are looking for a dog that would make a great companion for another laid back dog, we hope that you might consider Bullfrog. Finian was found wandering the streets of Hampton on March 16th, his back leg injured and his head, face, eyes, and mouth burned with acid. This poor boy was left to fend for himself.
Luckily, the amazing people who found him were able to get him to The COVE (Center Of Veterinary Expertise) for care and comfort that first night, then he went to stay with our friends at Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter for a few days, and now he's with us.
We may never know who did this to Finn, but we do know that even though he's been through a lot... the only time he cries is when he's left alone.
Over the past few months, Finn's face has healed, his vision has improved (but will never be great), and he underwent very intricate orthopedic surgery to repair his back leg.
Finn desperately wants to be with people, but, he's never really had a chance to be a \"normal\" dog with loving humans. He's still learning.
Sometimes he's fearful, sometimes he's over-excited and mouthy, and sometimes he's a calm snuggly dude.
Finn will only be considered for adoption to a home with no children (nobody under the age of 18), and no other pets.
He needs an experienced person to help him take his next steps towards recovery.

There's always a wiggle in tail, a bounce in his step, a glimmer of joyful mischief in his eyes...
Hooper just lights up when we come near, and if we happen to have a toy... WOOHOO!!! BEST! DAY! EVER!!!
What amazes us isn't how happy Hooper is (very), but that he is determined to stay happy, and to spread happiness, despite being desperately lonely and bored at the shelter.
Hooper had a loving home (and excellent house manners!), but the other dog in the family was NOT happy with Hooper's presence, and constantly attacked him.
Eventually, the nonstop aggression became too much for Hooper, and the family brought him back to Animal Aid.
Now this sweet, healthy, smart, HAPPY hound is confused about why he lost his couch and soft bed and hikes and belly rubs by the TV.
He'd really like that back.

Such is the case with our beloved Odie Cakes. He is an amazing dog - fast, perceptive, adorable, loving and devoted. But, he also is very prey driven. And sometimes, when he gets overexcited, he reacts quickly, without thinking.
Odie found a home but the atmosphere was just a bit too much for him. Despite the best efforts of the adopter, he realized he could not slow down the pace of his life enough to calm Odie.
The BEST news is that since being back with us, Odie has been fabulous. He loves all the volunteers, he has a pal in our Finn (with just through the fence play) and he greets each day and each person with happiness.
Odie's days are very calm and predictable at the Shelter and that's what gives him the calmness and peace he needs. Odie doesn't need constant activities or other dogs - Odie just needs a person who will live life with him in a somewhat boring manner.
We know Odie's person is out there somewhere. He is so loved by us all and we want nothing more for him than to live his life in happy home.

He is one of the most social, loving, affectionate dogs I've ever met (and I've met A LOT of dogs), but he is so desperately lonely.
Why?
Because Max has a weird programming glitch that makes him convey his friendliness and joy in the most off-putting way possible.
When Max sees a potential friend (so, ANY human or dog -- he absolutely adores both!), he makes very loud, unpleasant sounds that most people read as \"angry and deranged.\" That couldn't be further from the truth!
If you brave the barks and yowls and walk up to Max, he'll immediately quiet down and reward you with kisses and cuddles! He'll lean his soft red self against you, gaze into your eyes, and be so utterly content and happy.
Don't get me wrong -- Max isn't fussing all the time! He's calm and quiet when he knows he's alone... but when he sees a person nearby, he begs and pleads for attention. Once he realizes you're there for him, he'll settle down and do his thing.
Max loves to run and play, but his favorite activity?
Snuggles.
After dinner, he'll wait by the door of his apartment. If one of us walks up and says \"snuggles?\", Max immediately jumps on his bed, waits for us to sit down, and then lays himself across our lap. He's snoring in seconds, with a big smile on his face.
Max LOVES other dogs, and is a fabulous, respectful playmate! We recently introduced him to Naomi, a 35-pound hound who wasn't too sure about playing. Max was so patient, assuming every welcoming pose he could think of, including laying belly-up on the ground, to earn her trust. At one point, he put a gentle paw on her shoulder, as if to say, \"it's ok! 'll keep you safe.\" Soon the two were gently playing -- sweet Naomi and the best big brother ever.
PLEASE -- spread the word! Come meet Max, give him a chance! Get past the initial glitch and see him for what he really is -- a sweet, eager-to-please, desperately lonely guy who just needs a friend.

\"I reach down and introduce myself to Betty White. Betty was transferred to us from another shelter; she is blind and deaf. No other information is known about her past life, but like other dogs that end up here in her condition, it was likely one of few comforts.
She bumps into several walls and with a small sniff my touch was accepted. A touch is everything, it conveys intention, it begins a connection. The wonders of hundreds of millions of years of neurological evolution to evoke a surge of something beyond an unconscious physical response\u2026 \u201ca feeling.\u201d We begin our conversation.
My hand grazes down her cheek and weeps for scores of downtrodden souls that came before her. Her face is rough, her eyes disfigured\u2026a forgotten road to never be traveled again. I offer a few soft pitiful words. The subtle vibrations travel to her inner ear to provide some stimuli of a presence in her dark solitude. Her head raises to triangulate where the vibrations resonate the strongest combined with a few wet-nosed sniffs to assist.
Her coarse white coat is patchy and neglected. Like a brail tragedy, my hand transfers stories of nights alone chained to a lonely post. My fingers flip through her medical file and confirm her heartworm positive condition.
My hand briefly stops at her heart. She has a 6 of 6 heart murmur (the most intense) that will prevent aggressive heartworm treatment. My hand though, is ignorant to this language of the heart as it falls on my deaf touch.
I busily change her sheets; they are bloody from an open leg wound and chewed-off scars. She has a tumor in one leg; we still don\u2019t know the results. I begin to make her breakfast\u2014a mix of kibble, cooked chicken, canned food, and Fresh Pet. I imagine an empty colorless room and haze of smells emerge in an eruption of sensory bliss.
Starting now, she will have dozens of compassionate hands to listen to her story, clinch in her struggles, tremble with her sorrow. Whatever time Betty has left, it will hopefully be filled with a feeling she has never known\u2014a sensation that can only be felt and falls short of description. She will feel the warm hands of sun rays in the grass and hands that hide tasty treats in their clutches. The world will not change for helping Betty, but the world will forever be changed for her.\"
