How do you respond to a rude roommate? ›

It's acceptable to approach your roommate after a while and tell them that you have a different idea about how clean the house should be. So long as they're receptive, try to be as specific as you can in terms of how well things should get cleaned.

You need to let your roommate know—in writing—that you are ending the current living arrangement. In the written notice, give a deadline by which the roommate (and the roommate's personal property) must be out of the rental.

One of the best ways to create distance between you and the person is to get out of the house more. Instead of coming straight home after school or work, stop and see a friend, take a walk in the park, do some shopping, or go to the gym.

And, if you can't rest assured knowing that your space isn't going to be invaded (and the situation doesn't get better after communicating about it), it might be a sign that you need to move on to a new roommate.

Attempt to talk to your roommate with civility about the need for them to leave. If the danger is that your roommate will act out of anger from not being spoken to directly, or they have not demonstrated much actual violence against you, try simply handling the situation on your own.

Give them time to talk so they don't feel attacked.

Try not to interrupt, and validate their feelings about the situation so they feel heard. If your roommate gets defensive or angry, try saying something like, “I understand you're upset, but I'd really like us to make some changes so that I feel comfortable here.”

Go into the conversation free of accusations. Instead, seek common ground. And imagine this: You may be behaving in an inconsiderate manner toward your roommate, too. A little humility will show your rude roomie you want to make an effort to improve the living situation as well.
